This week two very different reports were presented to me. One was of Forest Bathing in Japan, which is scientifically proven to improve health. Being in nature is good for you.
The second was how tech companies are writing code to get our brains "hooked" to apps and our phones. Coined "Brain Hacking" the longer the apps keep us engaged the more ads they can put in front of us. Essentially creating a society of stressed out, anxiety ridden people. Stressed without even knowing we are stressed.
When our phone notifications go off and we're not able to look at it immediately, our adrenal glands release cortisol, initiating the flight or flight response and if we can't look at the phone, anxiety mounts.
This happening day after day, overstimulates our sympathetic nervous system which releases cortisol into our bodies wreaking havoc on our systems leading to adrenal fatigue, a compromised immune system and other maladies.
When we take time to slow down, we become aware of our self. Deep breathing, meditation, being outside, doing yoga or simply reading a book can help stimulate our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).
It controls homeostasis, or the balance and maintenance of the body’s systems. It restores the body to a state of calm and counterbalance, and allows it to relax and repair.
Help restore balance and calm in your body systems. Turn off electronics and go for a walk. Sit on a rock at the river. Take a restorative yoga class. Meditate and practice deep breathing (pranayama). Do it daily, schedule it if you have to, but do it. Go on. You deserve it.
